Fatal Vision® Goggles
Fatal Vision® Goggles are training tools used to visually demonstrate various levels of impairments and the dangers of impaired driving.
Nationally, about 30% of traffic fatalities involve drunk drivers.
Last year 11, 773 Americans were killed in alcohol related crashes.
About three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some time in their lives.
A first time drunk driver, on average, has driven drunk 87 times prior to being arrested.
In Mississippi, about 40% of traffic deaths are alcohol related.
There were 23,693 DUI arrests in Mississippi in 2006.
The Goggles distort vision and cause the wearer to behave similarly to one impaired by alcohol or drugs.
The demonstration of the Goggles often includes the wearer attempting to play basketball, throwing soft foam balls back and forth to other students, attempting to walk a straight line, as well as other various skills to demonstrate the difficulty of performing basic tasks while wearing the Goggles.
MDOT has a total of five sets of the Fatal Vision® Goggles in varying degrees of “impairment”.
The Goggles are available for demonstration at schools attended by students in grades eight through college, and for various safety events.
There is no charge associated with the demonstrations; however, we do have a few limitations.

Below is some general information for those hoping to schedule a demonstration: |
- There must be a guaranteed audience of at least 50 people. Exceptions may be made for smaller groups in the immediate Jackson area.
- The Goggles are recommended for students who are at least 14 years of age.
|
- It is recommended that events or requests for the Goggles be scheduled a month in advance
|
- However, the beginning of the school year, near prom time, and the end of the school year are the busiest times and may require more advance scheduling than during other parts of the year. So the earlier you call, the better.
