MDOT Annual Safety Fair Scheduled for Saturday, March 31st
JACKSON, MISS., Monday, March 26, 2012—The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) would like to announce the 4th Annual Safety Fair in Jackson where the focus will be on child passenger safety.
The event will be held on Saturday, March 31st from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Mississippi Trade Mart at the fairgrounds in Jackson. There is no charge to attend the Fair. The fair will be centered on MDOT’s goal of reducing childhood fatalities by educating children and parents about child passenger safety, and occupant protection.
MDOT would like to invite all administrators, friends, students and families to attend this K-12 event. The “Rover” safety rollover demonstration, impaired driving simulations (SIDNE) as well as the low-speed simulation of a head on collision, the “Convincer” will be shown. MDOT will also unveil our newest safety tool at this year’s Fair – a virtual texting and driving simulator.
The Mississippi Office of Highway Safety will demonstrate seat belt safety with their Rock the Belt Program, a quick click challenge where students are paired in teams of four and then go around a car and buckle up in all four positions. The fastest team wins!
Safe Kids MS will have certified car seat technicians on-site to inspect and install child safety seats. There will also be a rock wall, face painting, a space jump, and concessions. The Jackson Fire Department will be present to talk with kids about fire safety, and the Lion’s Club of Jackson will be on hand to give free vision screenings.
MS Safe Routes to School will be at the fair, demonstrating correct biking safety to kids as well as aiding surrounding communities in providing a safe route for children to bike and walk to school. There will be a kid bike rodeo for all avid bike riders as well as information on the safe routes for your child’s school and certificates for all children who complete the bicycle safety course. Bike helmet fittings will be provided, and each child will receive a free bike helmet (while quantities last.) Also, be sure to enter the raffle to win one of the four bikes being used in the bicycle rodeo!
Please plan to attend MDOT’s 2012 Safety Fair on Saturday, March 31st from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The event will be informative and full of fun!
The Safety Fair is sponsored by MDOT, Safe Kids Mississippi, Mississippi Office of Highway Safety, Safe Routes to School, Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services, City of Jackson Police Department, City of Jackson Fire Department, Mississippi Underage Drinking Coalition, and the Lion’s Club of Jackson.
